Port Lockroy--Biggest Shopping Mall in Antarctica

The former whaling station (1911-1931) and WWII military base on Goudier Island is now a post office, museum (reminiscent of the "secret" tunnels in the cliffs of Dover, UK) and souvenir shop. When we arrived in 2014 the shop was promoting the centenary of the Scott Expedition. We didn't have the heart to tell them that they were two years late. Apart from the ubiquitous penguins, the major source of entertainment was watching the crew from the sailboat (right side of frame) making an ascent of the peak in the background. A couple of mountain travel and rescue instructors sitting in the ship's forward lounge were shaking their heads in disbelief as some of the climbers lumbered toward the peak on the overhang of the cornice. The expedition leader corralled them in time to avoid reproducing the outcome of the Scott venture.
